Of course it is to be taken literaly! I don't know what church you heard that from, but it does need to be taken literaly. The thing is that the Bible doesn't say or hint as to when the apocalypse is going to happen. It's good to be ready, but it might not even happen in our lifetime. Not all churches are like that. I know mine isn't. They don't assume or change anything from how the Bible says it.
