I think this song is a metaphor for any leader or soldier who goes to war for a seemingly noble cause but dies. Thier life and legacy is cut short. "You did not conquer only die". This was the age of Vietnam and it still fits today. I also hear this in "Emerson,Lake and Palmer's" Lucky man. It's a stellar song and I hope it will never be forgotten.

This was just my opinion. Both men in these songs had extraordinary lives but in the end they died for what. When I hear either of these songs I think how many lives are wasted in pointless wars.

heh...good point but you have to realize everyone steals from someone and everyone....maybe Procol stole this from Jethro Tull?...sounds alot like Tull?...no big deal..just send the great music!! So if Maroon 5 (who I'm seeing with the Counting Crows in July) stole a little...no big whoop...George from the Beatles said they were the biggest "knickers" (I assume that means cheaters...stealing licks and chords?) of all time?
