Unfortunately, the towers were not made from solid wooden blocks, strong to scale. Your example fails miserably. What DID happen, was that once the building's integrity failed, it collapsed DOWN, as GRAVITY dictates.

Build a wood block tower. Knock a few support blocks from one side of it and see what happens. The tower collapses toward the side with the missing pieces. Basic.

The collapse of the WTC towers on 911 was symmetrical, exactly as in controlled demolition. If the towers had fallen as a result of the plane damage and fire, the section above the damage would have fallen in the direction of the damage and off to the side. Most of the vertical supports would have remained intact and upright.
