(Aug. 4)The unemployed graphic designer at the center of a ricin case mystery is now expected to plead guilty to federal charges. Roger Bergendorff is accused of poisoning himself with the biological toxin in February while staying at a hotel room just off the Las Vegas strip. The 57-year-old then spent two months in a hospital. And he's been in federal custody since his April 16th arrest. Authorities have said the case has no ties to terrorism. Bergendoff allegedly admitted he kept the ricin for protection against unspecified personal enemies. Investigators reported finding about 4 grams of "crude" powdered ricin in the hotel room along with illegal silencers for 22-caliber weapons. Police also confiscated several how-to manuals for producing ricin, and castor beans from which the substance can be derived. Ricin can be lethal in amounts the size of a pin head. And federal prosecutors had said Bergendoff had enough powder to kill more than 500 people. Bergendoff had been charged with possession of a biological toxin and two weapons violations. Each carried a possible sentence of 10 years in federal prison and 250-thousand dollars in fines. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
