Well considering that most sources concerning the Templars are roman Catholic (remember that the Church was center of the Scholarly arts) it probably goes both ways, most of sources that are pro-templar Roman Catholic and so are a number of con-templar as well. The chuch might have motives as to why they spoke positive about them and motives as to why they spoke of negatively about them.
