I don't think that was Robert. While logically that should've been him, he was also Altair's target at the time and so would've been the one to be killed. I think these guys were just made for the purpose of the trailer, so no need to check continuity with the game's story.

He wasn't killing them because of their religion or anything. After all, he killed Muslims before finding out that they were Templars too, so it wasn't a religious thing.

And like waaagghh said, it's a conspiracy.

He probably is an atheist, though. Note how he keeps saying, "...your god..."
