牟田口司令官は、「失敗したら腹を切れ」と部下を難詰するも、
自身は自決することなく、余生をまっとうした。

部下に「陛下へのお詫びに自決したい」と相談した時に、
部下から「昔から死ぬ、死ぬといった人に死んだためしがありません。
誰も邪魔したり止めたり致しません。心置きなく腹を切って下さい。
今回の作戦（失敗）はそれだけの価値があります。」と言われたが、
結局自決することはなかった。

兵士たちへの謝罪の言葉は死ぬまで無かった。

それどころか遺言を残して、自分の葬儀においても、自己弁護を
印刷したチラシを参列者に対して配布させた。

東条英機といい牟田口といい、いくら修正史観でもこれらの
人物まで擁護できまい。
